Bel Air, I am convinced, was laid out by some diabolic sadist who deliberately decided not to use a compass or a surveyor.

About This Quote

Bel Air is a rather peculiar neighborhood in Los Angeles. It’s a sprawling community, consisting of numerous individual residences and estates, all with their own unique architectural styles. For instance, there is the Chateau Marmont, a Mediterranean-style villa with a swimming pool in the front yard. There is the Alta Cienega estate, a Mediterranean-style mansion with a large fountain in the middle of its entryway.

And then there is Bel Air Estates, a compound of nine properties surrounded by walls and hedges built on a hill overlooking the rest of Los Angeles. But one resident of Bel Air Estates has decided that this rather bizarre neighborhood is in fact laid out in perfect mathematical form—a statement so absurd that it had to be made up by somebody. And indeed it was. The architect behind Bel Air Estates was Fred Eaton, who also built Leland Stanford Junior University and the Rockefeller Center in New York City, among many other buildings. After his death in 1946, his son John had all of his father’s plans and sketches scanned into an electronic database and then displayed on computer screens for visitors to peruse at Bel Air Estates.

The “Eaton grid” was used as reference for many years after Eaton’s death to establish new building lines and architectural details for new developments in Bel Air Estates. But despite its usefulness, some people have still maintained that the Eaton grid is nothing more than an example of the work of some diabolical sadist who purposefully designed Bel Air on purpose without using any map data whatsoever. So, whether you believe that the grid represents some diabolical sadist’s evil genius or merely represents one man’s mathematical brilliance, you can’t deny that it does appear to be something of a work of art.
